Over my 15 years in the tourism industry, including time spent briefly working as a travel agent, I’ve seen firsthand how the system works. Many agents, while helpful in certain areas, often turn to bloggers and local experts for destination-specific advice, particularly when their knowledge is limited to properties within their booking network.

Because most travel agents earn commissions from the hotels, cruises, and services they book, their recommendations tend to be limited to affiliated providers. This means they have little incentive to suggest an Airbnb, a locally-owned guesthouse, or a better-value tour that’s outside their system—even if it’s the best option for you. Their focus is often on what they can book and perks to offer, rather than what’s truly best for your travel experience.
